Hallux Valgus

A bunion is not a growth of bone, but it is actually an angular deformity of the great toe and 1st metatarsal (bone behind the toe in the foot).  They can range in size, and the size does not correlate to the pain. In other words, a small bunion can be painful while a large one might not be painful.

Bunions are typically treated by wearing comfortable, wide shoes and padding sore areas. When bunions are painful despite these changes, or if pain limits your desired activities, then surgery can provide relief. This will involve realigning the bones in your foot and toe to make them straighter.
